How Master Key Systems Actually Work — Pins, Chambers, and Hierarchies
A master key system is a precision engineering exercise performed inside the pin-stack chambers of your locks. Every standard pin tumbler cylinder — whether housed in a mortise lock body, a door knob lock, or a heavy-duty commercial deadbolt — contains a series of driver pins and key pins separated by a shear line. In a single-keyed lock, only one combination of cuts lifts all pins to exactly that shear line and allows the plug to rotate. In a master keyed cylinder, a second shear line is created by adding a wafer or a specially sized master pin between the driver and key pin in one or more chambers. This means both the change key (the individual tenant or staff key) and the master key can independently lift each stack to a valid shear line — they just do it from different heights.
Sub-master keys add another layer. A property manager at a Douglaston apartment building might hold a grand master key that opens every unit, every utility room, and every common-area door. A maintenance supervisor might carry a sub-master that opens only the mechanical rooms and the units on floors two through four. Individual tenants hold change keys that open only their own door.
